My great-grandmother’s voice took up space. The sound and utterances from her mouth originated from an ancestral and authoritative place. Her voice was big and demanded recognition. Her voice was not deep nor high. In fact, it was never about the octave or the volume. It was always the feeling and the vibration once your ears and body received the messages she spoke aloud. It was comforting and assured. It was solid and stable. Rosebud, my great-grandmother, never stuttered and her voice never shook.
