Pride comes before the Fall or Balancing Blessings in Harvest-Time

"Pride goeth before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of a lowly spirit with the poor, Than to divide the spoil with the proud."- Proverbs 16:18-19 ASV

This past weekend was truly a remarkable experience as I embarked on a journey to Boston, Massachusetts, to partake in the Annual Northeastern Philosophy and Education Society 2024 Conference held at Boston College. The conference provided a unique platform for engaging in thought-provoking discussions that transcended ideological boundaries, especially amidst the backdrop of the ongoing Presidential election. It was a moment that called upon all participants to deeply contemplate the moral imperative of upholding and nurturing our dialogues, methodologies, and educational approaches concerning democracy as an essential aspect of our societal fabric.

One of the highlights of the conference for me was serving as a Chair for the morning sessions, which were centered around the theme of "Examining Democracy across the United States of America." The opportunity to lead discussions and facilitate conversations on such a critical topic was both enriching and fulfilling. Additionally, having Sage Ali, a five-year-old, accompany me throughout the conference added a unique perspective to the entire experience. Witnessing her engagement and participation in an academic setting was truly inspiring and a testament to the inclusive nature of scholarly discourse.

As the conference unfolded, it became increasingly evident that the intersection of philosophy, education, and democracy was not only intellectually stimulating but also inherently linked to the broader societal landscape. The diverse range of perspectives and insights shared by scholars and attendees alike underscored the significance of continuous reflection and dialogue in shaping our understanding of democracy as a way of life.

Overall, my time at the Northeastern Philosophy and Education Society Conference was a transformative and enlightening experience. It reinforced the importance of fostering critical thinking, promoting inclusivity, and nurturing a culture of intellectual exchange to address the contemporary challenges facing our democratic principles. I left Boston with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper commitment to advancing the discourse on democracy in the pursuit of a more just and equitable society.

The North Eastern Philosophy of Education Society (NEPES) is a regional organization of the Philosophy of Education Society. Members, presenters, and annual conference participants focus on rigorous discussions about the history, policy, pedagogy, and contemporary issues within education as understood through the discipline of philosophy. Annual conferences occur during the fall semester. The organization prides itself on being a very cordial and inviting environment for junior and seasoned university faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, pre-service and in-service teachers, administrators, and community members. The annual conferences have a "small" feel, but are quite energetic, creative, and positive. The intimate and conversational climate of the conferences allow for making connections and inspiring each other to address and work with educational issues and deeply investigate the philosophical roots that create contemporary conditions of education. It is truly remarkable how her eagerness to accompany me to such events never fails to amaze me. I find myself feeling a sense of sentimentality when I consider the freedom she has to express herself and participate fully in these environments. It is heartening to see that she does not feel the need to conform or alter herself simply because she may be the only child present. This experience makes me reflect on the future and the advantages she will have as she grows older and gains exposure to academic settings and higher education institutions.

Envisioning the doors that will open for her, the opportunities she will have, and the knowledge she will acquire through such early exposure fills me with hope and excitement. Witnessing her confidence and independence flourish in these spaces is a true privilege. It is inspiring to see her laying the foundation for a future filled with endless possibilities and growth. The way she navigates these environments with grace and curiosity showcases her resilience and adaptability, qualities that will undoubtedly serve her well in the years to come.

As I observe her interactions and engagement with diverse individuals in these settings, I am reminded of the importance of fostering a sense of openness and inclusivity in her upbringing. These experiences not only shape her perspective on the world but also instill in her a sense of empathy and understanding towards others. I am grateful for the opportunity to witness her journey unfold and to play a role in nurturing her curiosity and thirst for knowledge.

In essence, these moments spent together at such events are more than just outings; they are building blocks for her future success and personal development. Each experience contributes to her growth, shaping her into a well-rounded individual with a deep appreciation for learning and exploration. I look forward to seeing the remarkable ways in which she continues to thrive and make a positive impact on the world around her.

I am truly blessed to find myself in a position where I can navigate through a multitude of diverse environments and encounters, all while setting a positive example for my daughter. As a first-generation college student, a parent scholar, and a full-time working mother, I am acutely aware of the value of the opportunities and resources that have allowed me to effectively manage these roles. I do not take for granted the significance of this accomplishment, understanding the sacrifices and hurdles that have been overcome to reach this point in my life. Despite encountering numerous challenges along the way, I am thankful for the clarity of mind and unwavering determination that drive me forward with poise and purpose.

The path that has brought me to where I am today has been defined by resilience, unwavering determination, and a profound sense of appreciation for the assistance and sacrifices of those who have preceded me. I am dedicated to seizing every moment and using them as a source of inspiration and empowerment, not only for my daughter but also for others who may be confronting similar obstacles. In all honesty, I simply cannot afford to become entangled in trivial matters when so much is at stake.

This brings me to the ways I have been elevating rest and restoration in my practice as a working mama scholar. I must protect my mental health and wellness at this point. Thinking about adding to the tradition of Black Feminist Epistemology, I have positioned a rested and restored self as the only one available for authentic success. I have divested in too many activities that did not make healthy deposits in my soul and spirit. After years of overachieving and operating in hyperindependence, I can say that there is some dead weight I need to let go to the wayside. There is still nothing to prove.

In the pursuit of elevating rest and restoration, I have incorporated various strategies into my daily routine. I have learned to prioritize self-care activities that nurture my mental and emotional well-being, such as mindfulness practices, journaling, and spending quality time with loved ones. This is why I decided instead of rushing back to NYC, it would be way more impactful to spend a full, aesthetic and beautiful Autumn day in Boston. This small act was a way I reminded myself to carve out time for rest, I have noticed a significant improvement in my overall productivity and creativity as a scholar when I really pay attention to me and what I am doing. We went to the art museum, ate brunch, went to church, went to the bookstore and went by the beach.

My exploration of Black Feminist Epistemology has deepened my understanding of the importance of centering a rested and restored self in academic work. It is the only way I can see and be successful. By embracing rest as a form of resistance against oppressive systems that devalue self-care, I am contributing to a more inclusive and empowering academic environment. I have to come as my best self and set the tone as much as possible unapologetically. As I continue on this journey of self-discovery and growth, I am committed to letting go of any activities or beliefs that no longer serve me. By releasing the pressure to constantly prove myself, I am creating space for authentic success to unfold naturally. Through this process of introspection and renewal, I am embracing a more holistic approach to my work as a working mama scholar.

I am currently situated at a pivotal juncture in my life, a moment that holds a unique position in the broader tapestry of my family's history. This phase is characterized by the ambitious endeavor of breaking through barriers and forging a fresh path to establish a novel legacy. As I navigate this uncharted territory, the networks of support that surround me are distinct, diverging from conventional norms. Despite the unconventional nature of my journey, I approach the cultivation of my endeavors with meticulous care, ensuring that every step I take is deliberate and calculated. It is imperative for me to maintain a sense of grounding and equilibrium amidst the whirlwind of change and growth that defines this transformative period.
